Are you Constipated?



Constipation is a serious problem, not only in the USA, but in the world today, but I am not here to talk about this serious issue...I am here to talk to you about one that is even more serious and even more commonplace.

In the heat of battle...many people freeze due to their training.

The training they have undertaken is full of theory and other things that are great to talk about when relaxing over a beer.  I would like to say that this type of training is full of B.S (Basic Skills), but teachers think that they need to dazzle people with their "knowledge" and big words, when in reality they are doing their students a disservice.

Many teachers think that teaching someone about things that are not combat tested like Sound, Energy Projection, what colors they should be thinking of, etc is going to get them more students.  It may in the beginning until people realize that the teacher is full of Bravo Sierra.  

Someone is going to get hurt.

The constipation I am talking about is Mental Constipation, which in some cases can be much more serious than the "other", more recognizable kind.

So how do we stop this scourge on humanity?

I think it is simple.  Teach high quality martial arts without the nonsense.  Focus on the what they student needs, not what the teachers needs to fulfill his/her egotistical requirements.

My question for you today is...Where in your training and teaching can you increase the quality of what you are doing and what you are passing on to your students?  Do some things need to be added? Deleted?  Modified?

In most cases, Knowledge is Power. When it comes to the martial arts...if you are teaching...then yes...Knowledge is Power or else no one would seek you out...BUT...Knowledge of what? If all one can do is dazzle someone with their BS, well...then the students, and the instructor for that matter...would have a false sense of security should they ever have to test their skills in a real confrontation. Choices

We make choices each and every day in every thing we do. Think about it for a second... Just the fact that you may or may not have stopped to thin about it...was a choice. You also made a choice to read this blog now, push it off until later, or scroll right on by and not read it at all.  All of these are choices. Choices are basically questions we ask ourselves.  For example..."What should I have for breakfast?  Should I cook something or just pick something up on the way to work?"   Every second of every day we make choices for everything...even whether or not we finish reading this blog.  Hell!  Just me making the decision to write on this topic...was a choice. Rocks in your feed bag?

Growing up my parents had a friend from Ohio that they had met in Barbados.  He would keep all of us entertained all day as we hung out at the pool with him and his wife and then the whole family would go to room 105 for drinks and canned cheese and crackers. Uncle Wil would tell us story after story about him growing up and the trouble he got in growing up during the depression.  He kept us in stitches and to this day, when someone in the family starts part of one of his sayings...someone else is sure to finish it.
