Hey! I'm Styling!!
What is a style with regards to the martial arts?
IMO it is not only a teaching methodology, but a learning methodology as well.
Instructors have to learn HOW to teach. Just knowing the material is not enough. You can be an encyclopedia of knowledge and have credentials out the wazoo (this is a highly technical term) and this means nothing if you do not have the ability to connect with your audience. As the saying goes, "People do not care how much you know, until they know how much you care."
As a teacher, your job is not only to impart your knowledge to others, and to help them learn it quickly, efficiently, and of course safely. The job of a teacher is to make the experience for the student exceptional. The class should be about the student, not a stage for the instructor to show off what they know or how good they are. That is great for a demo...not for teaching classes.
Connecting with your students is the key...IMO and it really simple...remember that we instructors are no different than those we are teaching...we just have a little more information and skill that we are willing to impart to others.
How do we impart this information more effectively?
Many put the entire learning process on the student. I strongly disagree with this. The student is responsible for the material, only if it is presented in a manner that they can make use of it.
Teaching the material in an easily duplicatable format, will definitely help the student not only quickly learn and retain the material...it can and will be used as a springboard towards higher proficiency in all parts of your life.
Even if the student receives all the material in a handful of notes...only a few REALLY dedicated students will be able to make sense of this learning style. This does not mean that one has to be spoon fed. The whole concept of a style is both teaching and learning methodologies.
For me personally...I had no desire to create my own "style" when in reality, I have been doing this my entire life. What I am talking about is my personal style. This is how I learn and how I impart this knowledge to others.
My question for you today is, "What is your Style and can you explain in 30 seconds or less to a complete stranger, what that is?
Until next time KO your obstacles by keeping it simple, keeping it safe, and train with PinPoint™ accuracy.
